To capture your pen strokes, the Staedtler 990 uses infrared and
ultrasound waves that communicate between the pen's tip and a
positional receiving unit. The info passed between the pen and the
receiver passes through a complex algorithm to create a vector image
of your notes or sketches. This is the most common form of technology
used by digital pens because it's accurate and you don't have to
purchase or print special paper.


However, the positional receiver option has its drawbacks as well.
Bumping the receiver once you've started on a page will distort the
vector image. Also, you have to be very conscious not accidentally
block the signal from the pen to the receiver with your hands. Most of
the time, interference occurs when your index finger covers the sensor
on the pen. This is an easy pitfall to fall into because the grip has
a tapered transition into the sensor area, making the sensor a natural
resting place for your index finger.
